In checking both "History of..." books I have for St. Joseph, the first attempt at a public school in St. Joseph took place in 1860. There were three wards at the time. The Third Ward school was originally called Madison, located at Second and Cherry streets. By the time the 1881 book was published it was called First Colored School. By the 1898 book I have it was known as Humbolt School. I could not find the year of change in either book.
The three original "public" school in St. Joseph were opened April 23, 1860.
