Barbara, I am having trouble making this go, but there was a Lewis Hartshorn with wife Margaret who lived in St Joseph during the latter half of the 19th century. They were ex slaves born in Virginia and came to Missouri from Washington D.C. Margaret did not think much of Missouri and according to a chapter in a book I recently finished thought "Missouri was nothing but Hogs and Hominy" They were the grandparents of Coleman Hawkins, the famous tenor saxaphone player. William Ridenbaugh was the founder and editor of the St Joseph's first daily paper in 1845 and which is still being published. Ridenbaugh street is named for him. He has a big stone at Mt Mora. He was one of the movers and shakers in St Joseph. I am sure he would figure prominently in any history of Buchanan Co. or St Joseph including Sheridan Logan's OLD ST JO. I not know of any connection between the Hartshorns and the Ridenbaughs. The Ridenbaughs had money. The Hartshorns were much poorer. They live!
d mostly in the area of south 14th, 15th and 16th near Angelique street in small shotgun houses. They lost many of their grandchildren at a young age to consumption. Many are buried in the Northwest Priviledge at Mt Mora. But they also left quite a legacy. There was Coleman Hawkins, mentioned above, also a descendent who founded the school of social work at Howard University and one who is a distinguished literary critic and a full professor and head of one of the English departments at Yale University. Good luck in your research.
