My husband's greatgrandmother was Margaret Amanda Smart. The family
knows
that she was of Native American descent. We are from Kansas, but have
lived
in Osage Beach for the last 20 years.
Just yesterday my brother-in-law back in Kansas went to a Smart Reunion.
One of the stories he heard was that a man named Smart lived "somewhere
near
Camdenton when he died. His grave was covered up by the lake that they
built. The family decided not to move the body, but let it be covered up
by
the lake." This man was supposed to have been Cherokee and was possibly
a
chief or high
ranking official at some point.

Can anyone confirm this story, or give us some idea of how to go about
confirming it?
