Does anyone have much information about Abadyl?
One of the Ozark nursing homes has "field trips" which may be just a
drive. The current favorite destination is the little community of
Abadyl in the northeastern part of Christian County. It's a lovely rural
area northeast of Bruner, northwest of Elkhead. Several of the
90-somethings who have been taking the nursing home rides through Abadyl
have become fascinated with the area and want more information about it.
Problem is I'm just not finding a lot
I know the location: 27N 18W Section 18 37 02 18N-092 5649W
I know the Post Office there operated 1895 - 1919, and the mail was
then routed through Bruner.
I found the Moser entry on it:

Here are some maps & satellite views of Abadyl

I know current landowners in the area are named Moon, Iorg,
Kirkpatrick, Gohr, Smith, Williams and Phillips (no, not my relatives -
but both have been in the area for well over a century).
I know James Breazeale, Jesse Phillips and Robert Mears owned land there
in 1876.
I know land was patented in the area by James Lee in 1860, Oliver P.
Cates in 1861, Henry Lee in 1871 and Andrew J. Brazeal and Michael
Fitzpatrick in 1893.
The 1912 Plat book shows the town of Abadyl on the line between
property of J. Brazeale and J. A. Jackson with P. R. Phillips, M.
Fitzpatrick, J. W. Reed, and James Scanner also owning land in that
section and other nearby landowners names Holman, Loveland, Ervin,
Swearengin, Fulton, Bookout, McCarty, Roberts, Padgett, Burke, Connett,
Reed, Brothers, Brown, Copeland, Walker and Atkins.
I know that the family who were the first settlers in much of the
surrounding area and whose descendants still live there are the McHaffies.
What I don't know are any stories about Abadyl - well, maybe a bit more
than I did a few minutes ago. I decided to check PERSI and learned that
Nina Todd had written a two page article about the history of Abadyl
which appeared in Volume 4, Noumber two, Summer 1989 , page 58 & 59 of
Christian County Historian. How ironic is that that I need to go to
Indiana to find an index of a local publication??? Well, at least
someone has done it.
Does anyone know anything about the town of Abadyl which could
contribute to the understanding of this part of Christian County?
