Bob, I went to your website and found it very well done. I didn't expect
that many Confederate veterans listed for Douglas County. For one of the
many Old Soldier's Reunions that followed the Civil War, we have a complete
listing of 100 plus veterans who attended along with their units. However,
only seven registered themselves as Confederate. I'll mail you a copy of
the article because I know you want to compare it with your records. I did
notice that you listed Joshua Barnes as a Confederate on your site but he
registered himself as having served with the Union at the 1900 Reunion. But
from what I've read, some actually served on both sides.

My impressions of reading post-war Douglas County history is that
Confederate Veterans were accepted into the community by the 1900s. There
were however, lots of strong feelings among neighbors for generations.
However, I recall reading of one instance where a person ran for county
office in the late 1890s, and the big issue in the campaign was whether he
served with the Confederate side but was lying about it. It didn't seem to
matter that he was on the Confederate side, it was the possibility of his
dishonesty.
