The following appeared in the Mountain Prospect, 18 Feb. 1887 issue (courtesy of Tidbits Vol II from the Wright County Historical Society):
On Friday afternoon, February 11, Smallwood Bros. Shingle Works in Douglas County was the scene of one of the most painful accidents that ever occurred in this part of the state. According to the best information we could obtain, it seems that old man Thomas Smallwood, his son George, old man Crane and his son, George, were working or standing near the boiler, when it exploded and turning end over end, fell upon George Smallwood crushing him into the ground. He was dug out as soon as possible, and though alive was senseless and thought to be fatally injured. His father, Thomas, was killed instantly. Old man Crane had both legs and an arm broken and his son George was badly scalded. The survivors received every care and attention that could possibly be rendered by the neighbors and their friends and families have the deepest sympathy of the people generally.

Thomas's son, Thomas Newton Smallwood, is buried at Denlow with his wife.
