Thanks, Kristi for the Smallwood citation. You know this citation from the
February 1887 is one month earlier than March 1887 when the Douglas County
Herald started up for what really was the second time (yes, Virginia, there
was an earlier Herald in the 1880s -- no copies survive). So within Douglas
County, we have no newspaper record for February 1887. Thus the Mountain
Grove Prospect (from Wright County) is one of our few sources in the area
that predate the Douglas County Herald. We all need to remember that.

Subject: [MODOUGLA] RE: Smallwood

The following appeared in the Mountain Prospect, 18 Feb. 1887 issue
(courtesy of Tidbits Vol II from the Wright County Historical Society):
On Friday afternoon, February 11, Smallwood Bros. Shingle Works in Douglas
County was the scene of one of the most painful accidents that ever occurred
in this part of the state. According to the best information we could
obtain, it seems that old man Thomas Smallwood, his son George, old man
Crane and his son, George, were working or standing near the boiler, when it
exploded and turning end over end, fell upon George Smallwood crushing him
into the ground. He was dug out as soon as possible, and though alive was
senseless and thought to be fatally injured. His father, Thomas, was killed
instantly. Old man Crane had both legs and an arm broken and his son George
was badly scalded. The survivors received every care and attention that
could possibly be rendered by the neighbors and their friends and families
have the deepest sympathy of the people generally.

Thomas's son, Thomas Newton Smallwood, is buried at Denlow with his wife.
