I realize this is only anecdotal, but my father, born in New Madrid in 1905, used to talk about attending the hangings at the NM jail and did refer to the last hanging involving the killing of a worker during a robbery. The time frame would be about right (prior to his marriage, since I'm sure my mother would not have approved of this type of outing!).
