According to my "Handybook for Genealogy, 8th edition" there was a state
census taken for Missouri in 1876. I own a copy of the microfilm of that
census year, which I purchased from the Missouri State Historical Society,
but it is only for Moniteau county. I suspect you could purchase the one
for Howard county, or it might be in some libraries. My reel cost me $15 a
few years back. Don't know what the current prices are. If the Howard
county one is anything like the one for Moniteau, it is more like a farm
schedule than a census. It only listed the head of household, and then a
comprehensive listing of their land, livestock, grain, etc. It was of very
limited genealogical value, other than placing your ancestor in that place
and time.
