>From "The Higbee News" dated 23 Oct 1909--DIED IN HER 90th YEAR--Mrs. Amanda
Roberts was born Sept 4, 1820,
died Oct 2, 1909, aged 89 years, 1 month. At an early date in the history
of the country
two brothers of the Adams family came from England to America. One of these
settled
in Massachusetts and the other in Virginia. Of this Virginia family was
Mrs. Roberts on
her father's side. Her mother was of the Bledso family, a large train of
which now reside
near Lexington, Ky. Her father, John Adams, moved from Virginia to
Kentucky, and
from there to Howard county, Mo, in an early date of that county.
She was married Dec 25, 1841, to Thos. Roberts of Howard county, who died
Feb
25, 1866. She was the mother of ten children, four of whom are living, viz:
W. T., Joel
H. and Miller B. Roberts and Mary Lucy Dougherty. She has 17 grandchildren
and 28
great grandchildren. She was the last of a family of nine children.
She had been a resident of Dexter for nearly 28 years, a member of the
Doherty
household.
She became a christian in early life and was a member of the Christian
church for
68 years. She lived in the early days of this religious movement and she
lived in its
centennial year, seeing it's wonderous growth. She was a bible student, had
read much
and memorized a great deal.
She had been in an enfeebled condition of body for years, but had been
failing
rapidly for the past few months. She retained until the last her wonderful
memory. Her
life was full as it was long, and they were checkered years of light and
shadow. There
came to her happiness and joy, sorrow and sadness and peace--a peace that
passeth
understanding, a beautiful resignation to whatever came, a trusting in His
will.
A grandmother will be missed by the fire, her chair is vacant, but the home
will
always feel her presence and know the benediction of that life.
There so many loves in that other world and their call was the stronger.
She
obeyed that call. "And there God shall wipe all tears from their eyes, and
there shall be
no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more
pain, for the
former things are passed away."
Funeral services were conducted at the Doherty home at 3 o'clock tuesday
evening by E. J. Church, of the Christian church, and the interment took
place at the city
cemetery--Dexter Advertiser.
