Hi Carolyn,

Augustine Gatewood was the oldest son of Richard Gatewood and Sally
Anderson. He came to Howard county at about the same time as his sister
Catherine, who had married Joseph Dougherty, and another sister Eliza, who
was the wife of Granville Atkins. Augustine died 5 August 1845, leaving a
wife and several children. The male child has been listed with a variety of
names and initials in various court documents, but was commonly known as
"Claib", and he is buried next to his mother in New Hope Cemetery in Howard
county. I have him listed as Claiborne J. P. Gatewood, but his tombstone
says Claib F. and the 1860 census has him as Columbus. Take your pick.
Augustine's father, Richard deeded land to the widow Gatewood and her
children in Howard County. Howard Co, Mo Deed book 2, pg 113, dated 2 June
1852 . Richard Gatewood deeds to his son Augustine's widow and children, 40
acres of land to wit "SW quarter of the NW quarter of Sec 3 in twp 51 of

When Richard died, a year later, he made provision for the children.
His will follows: His will was written on the 29th of March 1852, and was
filed for probate on 17 Jan 1853, in Jessamine County, Ky. On pg 424, it
reads: Know all men by these presents that I Richard Gatewood of the

direct my Executor to retain two hundred and fifty Dollars out of my estate
for the maintainance of my Negro Man Tom--however should he die leaving a
portion not appropriated for his benefit it is to revert back to my estate
and shall be distributed as my other property. The above named Tom shall
have the liberty of selecting his home. 7th I will and direct my Executor
to sell all my stock Crop it being matured my house hold furniture and every

Anderson and Susan and Sarah Gatewood each the sum of six hundred dollars in
order to make them, equal with my other children--after which I direct my
Executor to divide the remainder arising from my estate equally amongst all
my children, with this condition that my Executor shall have full power to
invest the money in all cases--for the benefit of such of my children as he
may think incapable of doing the same in a safe and judicious manner and
particularly the heirs of Augustine Gatewood for the benefit of children.

Her tombstone in New Hope Cemetery lists her name as Marium Gatewood, d
6-4-1881 72y 2m 8d.

After her death, Claib moved to Montana. Following are his notes:

>From "The Higbee News" dated 11 Dec 1908--Clabe T. Gatewood of Helena,
Montana, is visiting relatives near Myers. Mr. Gatewood went to Montana
thirty years ago, and this is the second time he has been back, his first
visit being eighteen years ago.

>From "The Higbee News" dated 19 Feb 1909--Clabe Gatewood, of Montana, sold
the old Gatewood farm of 200 acres located 6 miles southeast of Higbee
Saturday to Wm. Edwards of near Higbee for $6,000. One hundred acres of
land is well timbered.

>From "The Higbee News" dated 19 Mar 1909--Caleb Gatewood who sold his farm
south of Higbee to Wm. Edwards
recently, left Wednesday for his home in Montana.

His tombstone in the New Hope Cemetery in Howard County, Missouri reads:
Clibe F. Gatewood, 1844-1916.

The eldest daughter of Augustine Gatewood (named for his grandfather of the
same name) was Sarah Gatewood. She married William Johnson in Howard
county, Missouri on 26 Dec 1852. He is the possible son or Grandson of
Richard Johnson, whose household he was a part of in 1850 in the Howard
county census. William died 15 Dec 1865, and she married second to Michael
Mozey Basye, April 28, 1867. However, when she died, she was buried as
Sarah Johnson, next to her first husband in the New Hope cemetery.

The next daughter, Mary Francis "Fanny" Gatewood married Berry Williams
sometime between 1850-1854 probably in Howard county, but I have no data on
that.

Martha Jane Gatewood married Willoughby Columbus Gatewood in Howard county
on 2 Oct 1859. They raised a large family and moved to Texas. Willoughby
and his wife are documented in the book "John and Amy Gatewood and their
Descendants" by Carol Gothberg and a photo of both is included in that pages
of that book.

Minnerva Gatewood married George W. Potter in Howard county, on 10 January
1867, and they stayed in the Howard county area.

Marium Emmaline Gatewood married James R. Hitt in Howard county on 10 Jan
1867, and stayed in the Howard county area.

I have not tracked Claib after he went to Montana, but I am assuming he
never married. There was never any mention of a family in the Newspapers,
and he was buried alone, beside his mother in New Hope.

Augustine Gatewood's headstone is stuck out in the middle of a farmer's
field, all alone. There may have been other graves there at one time, but
his is the only one still standing.

If you want a family report on this family, Carolyn, let me know and I will
email it to you.

Kathy
