26 May 1911--THE NEWS FROM BONNEFEMME--W. F. Naylor delivered hogs at
Fayette Monday at $5.65.
Judge G. J. Winn recently lost a valuable steer from clover bloat.
Eld. E. Y. Keiter filled his regular appointment at New Hope Sunday
afternoon.
Local showers here Saturday night were of great benefit to growing crops
and
pastures.
Miles C. Beachboard of Moberly visited his parents, J. C. Beachboard and
wife,
here Friday.
Thos. and J. W. Durnill of near Higbee were the guests during the week of
their
sister, Mrs. M. L. Andrews, of Moniteau township.
Miss Louie Thompson entertained a number of her friends Saturday evening at
the home of her grandfather, Jos. Majors. A pleasant evening was spent.
The attendance at Mt. Pleasant Sunday school Sunday was 57. We are pleased
to
state that our superintendent, Ed. S. St. Clair has recovered from his
illness and was able
to be present after an absence of two weeks.
Eld. G. M. Walker of Boonsboro appears to have very bad luck in handling
horses. About six weeks age he was kicked in the face by a horse. Sunday
morning
while en route to Perche to fill an appointment he offered the loan of a
supposedly gentle
horse by Geo. E. Long of this vicinity. On mounting, he was thrown
instantly, but was
only slightly stunned. Mr. Long made two unsuccessful attempts to ride the
horse but
was thrown also. Another horse was made in readiness on which Mr. Walker
made the
journey without further trouble.
2 June 1911--THE NEWS FROM BONNEFEMME--Robt Proctor of Burton visited
friends here Sunday.
R. A. Reynolds and sons of Oklahoma, came in Thursday on a visit to
relatives in
this township.
Eld. G. M. Walker filled his appointment at Mt. Pleasant Sunday, morning
and
evening. Morning subject, "God Is Love." At the evening services there was
one
addition to the church, a young lady.
Joseph Dougherty and son, Paris came down from Clark Wednesday on a visit
to
his father P. A. Dougherty, and other relatives.
Miles Beachboard and Misses Florence and Annie Andrews of Moberly
worshipped at Mt. Pleasant Sunday. They drove through in a buggy, returning
in the
afternoon.
Wade H. Long lost a valuable cow the past week from clover bloat, and came
near losing two others from the same cause. They were turned in a white
clover pasture.
It is a very rare occurence for white clover to cause bloat.
The cicada or locuts are here in great numbers. They began arriving May 20
and
have since constantly increased in numbers. They are said to be the 13 year
locusts. But
they were here 17 years ago, also 13 years ago.
The family of Ernest Watson, who reside just over in Boone county, were
poisoned Wednesday by eating sardines. When last heard from they were
recovering.
Local showers fell here Saturday and Sunday but were light. A hard rain
fell at
Harrisburg Sunday afternoon. The shower Saturday afternoon was accompanied
by a
high wind which did some damage to fruit trees.
During the thunder storm Saturday lightning struck the dwelling of Geo.
Holmbs
of Harrisburg. There was a person standing in the yard and one sitting in a
buggy by the
yard fence. Both were thrown to the ground by the shock.
G. F. Dougherty the hustling live stock dealer reports the following
purchases: 2
sows and pigs of Joseph Walker, $26.75; 8 hogs, weight about 140, $54; some
fat hogs of
Jas. St. Clair at 5 1/2.
While Wm. Gilvin and Otho Wainscott were driving along the Harrisburg and
Moberly road Sunday afternoon lightning struck and killed the horse they
were driving
and rendered Wainscott unconscious for some time.
A. J. Hitt came very near happening to a serious accident Saturday while
assisting
John Barton build a bridge near his home. He was excavating to place the
mud sill when
the bank caved in on him covering him completely. Prompt work soon rescued
him.
One arm was slightly injured.
