Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Burl Wheeler, who moved to Hugo, Colorado eight
years ago, and who arrived with his family last week for a visit, was a pleasant caller at
this office Tuesday. Mr. Wheeler advises us that his health has been fine since going
West and that he has been able to work every day and can accomplish three times as
much as he did here, all of which will be good news to his old Higbee friends. They will
also be delighted to know that he is prospering. He will leave Monday for home, and will
be accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Maxfield, the latter going for the benefit of Mrs.
Maxfield's health, and will make the trip in their cars.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Crew and daughters, Misses
Marie, Katherine and Margaret, of Muskogee, Okla., on their way home from a vacation
in Minnesota, were the guests of Higbee relatives and friends Saturday and Sunday,
leaving Monday in their car for home by way of Kansas City.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Andrews of Fayette left here
last night in their car for St. Louis for a visit with their son, William, accompanied by Mr.
and Mrs. Raymond Shafer. They will return Tuesday.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Baptist Church Notes--(excerpts) At the last
business meeting of Higbee church they elected four more deacons, namely, Ira Kirby,
Joe Lay, Geo. Lessly and Calvin Magruder. These will be ordained next Sunday, Aug.
31st, at 2:30 in the afternoon.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Celebrated 75th Birthday--Geo. Bartee of
Sturgeon, well known in this and the Yates vicinity, was 75 years old Friday of last week,
the 22nd, which event was celebrated at his home Sunday by a big birthday dinner, the
guests being relatives and friends. Those present: Frank Street and wife, T. N. Collier
and wife, Dock Bartee and wife, Clark; Thomas Lamb, Salisbury; Roscoe Gordon and
family, W. T. Gordon and family of Centralia; Arthur Bradley and family and Travis
Magruder of Higbee; Mrs. Marion Campbell, Quincy, Ill.; J. K. Bartee of Yates; Geo.
Bartee and wife, Chas. Bartee and wife, Ruby Hulen and family, Raymond Harper, H. C.
Lyon and wife, John Cross and wife, Mrs. Cora Finley, Joe Barnes and wife, Mrs. Luther
Jennings and daughter, Miss Jessie Benson, Mrs. E. A. Gresman, Miss Fannie Street,
Miss Mary Wermelskirchen and Oscar Hulen and wife.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Birthday Dinner--Sunday was a day that was
enjoyed by all at Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lewis', it being Mrs. Lewis' 52nd birthday. A
large crowd of her friends and relatives gathered at the noon hour with well filled baskets
and a fine dinner was spread. All departed at a late hour, wishing Mrs. Lewis many more
such happy birthdays. Those present: Mr. and Mrs. John White, Mr. and Mrs. B. M.
Avery, Mr. and Mrs. Walter White, Mrs. Walter Buckler, Mr. and Mrs. Lib Noel, Mr. and
Mrs. J. C. Dougherty, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Asbury, Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins Dougherty, Mr.
and Mrs. Sterling Farris, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Keithley, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Lewis, Mr.

Mrs. Chas. Sumpter, Mrs. Nona Harris, Silas Bradley and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Will

son.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Dr. J. W. Winn is driving a new Ford coupe,
purchased last week.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Born, on the 23rd, to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Dorman
of Chicago, a son.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Born, on the 22nd, to Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Andrews, a
son.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Born, on the 26th, to Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Dougherty,
a son.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Dr. S. A. Douglas purchased two new Dodge
touring cars this week.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Frank Barron left Wednesday for Lamar, Colo.,
where he has secured employment.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Little Ellen and Marie Bush of Moberly are the
guests of Mrs. Weaver Stevenson.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Elmer Cadmus left Tuesday for Emporia, Kansas
where he will attend school the coming year.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Jones were called to
Taylorville, Ill., Wednesday by the death of the latter's brother, Jake Watkins.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Chas. Dougherty, who has a good position in
Chicago, is at home for a week's visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dougherty.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Rev. Wm. Thompson of near Yates was called to
Browning, Mo., Monday to conduct a funeral.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--D. A. Mayer left Monday for Chicago, after a visit
with his aunt, Mrs. Laura Welch, and other relatives.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Mrs. Geo. Patterson and little daughter, Bettie Jane,
returned Saturday from a visit of six weeks with relatives in Washington.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Mrs. E. J. Thompson and little daughter returned to
her home in Slater Monday after a visit with her mother, Mrs. Susan Newman.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Mrs. David Kelso and little daughter returned to
Del Carbon, Colo., Tuesday after a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Smith,
accompanied by Andrew Kelso, who has secured employment there.

Friday, 29 Aug 1924, Vol 38 No. 19--Mrs. Thos. Hackward and children left yesterday
for Gebo, Wyo., to join Mr. Hackward, who has secured employment there, and where
they will make their future home, but only temporarily, their legion of friends hope. The
best wishes, of all follow them.
