Thanks to all of you who have given me more places to search.. I will follow
up all all these.

The heading of the letter, in this gentleman's hand, is:
Forest Home
Howard County, MO
Sept 28, 1867

Then, his closing was:
Address (just the word address... no actual address)
Fayette
Howard County
Missouri

But your e-mails have given me new hope.. at the very least some more
direction.

The person he was writing to was a young woman named Rowena Cox.. and she was
still living back in Virginia, where the writer was from, which was obvious
from certain things he wrote in the letter. There is absolutely no
indication as to the writer's name... he does mention his wife a few times,
whose name was Bettie.
