The following are selected articles from a Newspaper titled, "The Higbee
News" which
was issued out of the town of Higbee, in Randolph County, Missouri from the
years 1887
through 1953. The editors were W. H. Welch and his son H. Scott Welch. This
paper covered the Higbee area and also a great deal of
the northeastern part of Howard county. The copyright notice at the end of
this transcript is there for the sole purpose of keeping
this work free to the public, and to ensure that it is not
harvested by a fee-based corporate genealogy site, or published in any
format for profit. If you decide to use the information from
this transcription, PLEASE LIST ME AS THE SOURCE, rather than the paper. My
transcription is another generation removed from the
microfilm, and would thus be a third generation copy of the original paper.
For proper documentation, a researcher should obtain a
photocopy of the microfilm for their own permanent records, and use my
transcript as a guide or index. The microfilm is available
for interlibrary loan through the State Historical Society of Missouri, and
a copy is also on file at the Moberly Public Library,
generously donated by the Higbee Historical Society.

Thursday, 16 Feb 1928, Vol 41. No. 41, Page 4, Col. 5--ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT--C. W. Walker, of New Franklin, was arrested Saturday afternoon by deputy Sheriff Tom White, charged with attempted rape of a 10-year-old girl of that city. He was brought to Fayette and placed in the county jail. Mr. Walker has a wife, children and grandchildren and is 57 years old. It is thought that he will waive a preliminary hearing before judge walker on February 27th when the court will be in special session. So far as we could hear Mr. Walker had never before been in any kind of trouble and from his talk with the county officials didn't seem to realize the gravity of his crime, which under the law carries the death penalty, or minor degrees of punishment. All kind of rumors are current in regard to the affair, and we are told that sentiment is very strong against Walker at New Franklin. We were told at Fayette Monday that a prominent citizen of New Franklin had said that it would not be best !
for Walker to be released on bond, owing to the sentiment of New Franklin people against him.--Armstrong Herald.
