ASHBY, HARPER, REESE, SAWYER, WOODSON

"The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Sunday, April 7, 1912

IN INDEPENDENCE 72 YEARS.

Mrs. Margaret J. WOODSON, 92 years old, for seventy-two
consecutive years a resident of Independence, died yesterday
at her home in that city. She lived with her daughter, Mrs. Nellie
REESE, at 1604 West Electric Street. For eight years Mrs.
WOODSON had been confined to her home with old age. A
few days ago she was paralyzed. For many years, before her
decline in health, she was a forceful character in the social and
civic life of her city.

Mrs. WOODSON was born in Richmond, Ky. She was a
daughter of Dr. M. Q. ASHBY, a practicing physician, who
afterwards moved to Mount Sterling, Ky. In Richmond, Mrs.
WOODSON was a schoolmate of former Chief Justice MILLER
of the United States Supreme Court and of Brutus and Cassius M.
CLAY. In 1839 she was married to Samuel H. WOODSON, a
young lawyer, and for a short time they lived at Nicholasville, Ky.
In 1840 they came to Independence.

When they first came to Independence they lived in a log house
near the present Missouri Pacific main line station. Later they lived
on the site of the present home of Mrs. Margaret SWOPE. In 1871,
the house in which she died was built.

Mr. WOODSON became a member of the law firm of Woodson,
Chrisman & Comingo. He later was elected to Congress, and then
to the circuit court of Jackson County.

Mr. and Mrs. WOODSON were the parents of eleven children, of
whom five now are living. They are, Mrs. Nellie REESE, with whom
she lived; Samuel H. WOODSON, an attorney, and former mayor of
Independence; Mrs. Henry C. HARPER of this city; Mrs. A. F.
SAWYER of Independence, and William H. WOODSON, an attorney
at Liberty, Mo. Meade WOODSON, a son, died in Kansas City in
1882.

Mrs. WOODSON was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of
Independence. Funeral services will be in the Independence City
Cemetery, beside her husband.
