SKIRTS POOR RUNNING GARB.
When Edgar WILSON, desk clerk at police headquarters, and
L. C. MORLEY, chauffeur for the detective bureau of the police
department, went forth garbed as women last night, they had in
mind surprising purse snatchers who recently have been working
in the vicinity of Thirteenth and Fourteenth streets, between
Wyandotte Street and Broadway. Each is small and well
adapted to the role. Patrolman L. R. TOYNE of the Southwest
Boulevard Station hovered near to protect them.
However, the female impersonators reckoned with knowledge
only of bifurcated nether apparel and were especially ignorant of
the sprinting limitations of the 1914 model chokebore skirt such
as they chose for their experiment. At the alley on Broadway,
between Twelfth and Thirteenth streets, a man darted out,
snatched at the purse carried by one of them and was
commanded in basso to halt. He fled and as he ran they shot
three times at him. He staggered after one shot, and the two
thought to run him down, but the handicap of sausage skirts
prevented them running. TOYNE followed, but lost the man.
WILSON and MORLEY then ran into a rooming house at
1310 Broadway and asked for a room in which to change their
clothing. The landlord gave them a room, believing them to be
burglars, and went to a telephone near by and called the
Southwest Boulevard Station. Patrolman TOYNE was
instructed to arrest the impostors, but he explained the situation.
