Sandra, Gillis is still there but it is not an orphanage anymore. It is a
school for children (boys I think) who have behaviors not acceptable in public
school-usually due to child abuse, neglect, or drugs.
I do not know much about its history, but you might try the
www.kcpl.lib.mo.us. Select Local History when you get to the site. This is the Kansas City
(MO) Public library.
