[The following was taken taken from the 18th Annual Report of the Bureau of Mines and Mine Inspection of the State of Missouri for Year Ending December 31, 1904. I am posting this for informational purposes. I am not related to the deceased and have no further information.]
Drew Burris, while mining for the September Mining Company, met with a frightful and fatal accident August 7, 1904. Burris was preparing a shot when it prematurely exploded, disfiguring his face in a horrible manner. Both eyes were destroyed, and one of his arms and legs had to be amputated. Just prior to the explosion he was heard to remark: "I am having trouble." He had a tamping bar, composed of wood and gas pipe. If he used the wood end of the bar it is thought he tamped his shot too hard; but if he used the metal end, the cause of the premature explosion becomes plain. He was a young man, of good character, and supposed to be cautious and reliable. No inquest was held, as he lived for some time after the accident occurred.
