There were actually two restaurants there. The Rafters was the one in the
back that was wonderful. It closed in about 1980 and became a Sleepy Hollow
(out of Oklahoma City) for a while.
The Chinese restaurant was at the front, on the northeast corner of the
intersection. The Rafters was where 20th St. would run through it if it had
gone on east of Range Line.
I am blank at the moment about what the name of the Chinese restaurant was.
It was a tacky looking contemporary building with Chinese and Polynesian
symbols on the side of it. It seems like it was a man's name.
The Rafters was one of the nicest restaurants in the Joplin area, ever. It
was wonderful & we always ate there when we were back in town.
It is sad that the local culture would not support it, saying prices were
too high, even after it changed to Sleepy Hollow. They were both more
upscale restaurants, even more so than Wilder's downtown was. People
preferred going to Mr. Steak, Wyatt's and other places. This was when the
economy was really down in the Joplin area. They might make it today.
