Seeking death and burial information for my great-great grandfather, Thomas Underwood, born 1811 in Chatham County, North Carolina; married 8 June 1837 in Fountain County, Indiana, to Hester Ann WALDRIP; and died 1874-1880 in Newton or Jasper County, Missouri.
According to his son's biography, "when he was a young man his parents moved to a farm near Granby, Mo., not far from Joplin. After his father's death Mr. Underwood managed the farm and cared for his mother and some younger children."
The 1870 census for Marion Township, Newton County, Missouri, lists the Underwood family. The widow, Hester Ann, and youngest daughter are living with the Stephen Alexander Underwood family in Joplin in 1880. A couple doors down live the other sisters of the family. (Stephen was county school commissioner in Jasper County and later the superintendent of schools in Joplin.) Hester Ann is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Joplin in 1891.
I have a document wherein Thomas and Hester sell their farm in 1874 in Newton County, but have not been able to get down to Neosho and Carthage to visit the courthouses to research further.
I would appreciate any help you can provide as I am on deadline to make it into a new edition of the Underwood family history book series.
Many thanks!
Christy
