Subject: [MOJASPER] The problems with Ancestry

Try GenForum, although it is also owned by Ancestry. It works better.

I subscribed to Ancestry for a year, and when I found out that the indexed
censuses were mostly indexed incorrectly, I unsubscribed. For instance, my
gg grandfather, William Horton, (a common name, you would think). was
William Harton on Ancestry. I never had thought to look at that spelling.
And on the actual census, the Horton name was quite clear. This was just
one instance. There were so many more mistakes on the censuses that I just
decided not to pay Ancestry for access to bad transcriptions.

Since I only answer people who get in touch with me now, I don't know about
the problems you are experiencing. Because GenForum is free, Ancestry will
probably try to get rid of it. But I just sent some good stuff (Civil War
pension papers of her great grandfather) to a cousin that contacted me
through GenForum.

I am only on this site because I want someone to talk about Joplin in the
olden days (the 50's) and about the orange juice store. And the pimento
cheese sandwiches. The smell of that store. It was unique. And
wonderful.

And yes, my great-grandfather was born in Jasper County, MO, in 1853. But
I think the family was just passing through. It's a Greene County, MO,
family. With a diversion during the Civil War to Washington Co., AR.

If someone has birth records or school records from 1853, I would like to
know about them. My gg grandfather was a school-teacher in Lawrence
County, MO, in 1850.

Linda

Now, going to boards etc. is much more time consuming, and I am less likely
to try to help others. However, once I get to the boards, and figure out
how to follow discussion threads, I may gain more information. I may even
find someone I want to e-mail; but so often their e-mail address is no
longer valid. Now, that is a real 'bummer'. I've got at least two
'remote' cousins 'out there' that I would like to connect with again.

folder before I have an opportunity to receive and then delete them myself?
It certainly seems that way.
