Hello to the Jeff Co Board members.
The reason that I joined Jeff Co Board, is that I am looking for
contacts to my half-sisters Taylor family fro Jeff Co. Which also include
Sheriff & Judge John Williams & his wife Emeline Jane Cook.. My sisters Great
grandfather, Charles Taylor, seems to have married two of the Good Judge's
daughters, Ruth & Mary Ellen. Ruth died young Chas married Mary Ellen &
had a bunch of kids. Sis descends from William Andrew Taylor. There is just
not much real solid information about this family. Family legends abound,
however. Charles Taylor is said to have escaped an Orphan Train at age 14. in
the area. Then made his home there. Mary Ellen was said by her son William
Andrew to be Cherokee, who escaped from the "Trail of Tears" & lived in
the caves of the area. However that took place before Mary was born in
February of 1865. So, may be someone earlier. Then there are two versions about
the story of, Charles Taylor, being an outlaw and being shot off of a
telegraph pole, about 1910, while attempting to rob a train. Charles looks to
disappear about that time. Mary Ellen Williams/Taylor's obituary in St Louis,
says her family moved to St Louis about 1908. The other version from a
younger son says that Charles was shot as a Rail Road employee, during a train
robbery by the James Gang. But the James gang was out of business, long
before 1908-1910. William Andrew Taylor says that he remembers Rough Men
riding up on horses while they lived in the De Soto area and throwing "Bags of
Money" on the porch. The last time was when they announced that Charles
would not be coming home, 'cause he was shot off of the Telegraph pole. Wm A.
should have been about 21 in 1910. So, please contact me if anyone has infor
on any of these events or families.
Thanks Jake Thorn
