Heidi,

The published transcription lists Henry C. Mullen's occupation as Teacher. However, checking the census, it is preacher instead of teacher. Also, you might note that he is married and has been married two years, so his wife must be living elsewhere.

The notice in the Aurora newspaper would indicate that Ida Garlock did not die in Aurora and probably not anywhere nearby, but that is about the only conclusion that can be drawn.

I would suggest that you search the newspapers where the Garlocks were buried, Muscatine, Iowa, for an obituary for one or both of them. It is likely that there would have been an obituary or funeral/burial notice in the local papers where the burial occurred. It might at least state where the person died or what local funeral home handled the local arrangements. Sometimes the cemetery or local funeral home has records indicating where the death occurred or from where the body was shipped for burial.

If you believe the relative may be correct about Adelmer dying in Missouri, you could request and pay for a copy of the death certificate for Adelmer from the Missouri Vital Records Office. However, they will not refund the money if they don't find one.

I have primarily Lawrence County records so I can't help with marriage records in Iowa.

I cannot evaluate the accuracy of the various marriage information without knowing the sources. There is much genealogical information published in family histories in print and available on websites which is not accurate. Often times it is a "best guess" and not proven or based on what some distant relative said and someone else's interpretation or memory of the name. It is often a deduction or guess based on the information available to the person at the time that the genealogy was compiled. Likewise, there are also errors in names in published records and even in original records. If you can find Ida's death certificate, it would be likely to give her maiden name and parents names. Also, because Adelmer was still living, he would likely have been the informant for the death certificate and may have given correct information. Unfortunately, death certificates are often not accurate about information other than the name and date of death of the person. No single sou!
rce is sufficient. The more sources, especially primary records (photocopies, not transcriptions), that agree, the more reliable the information.

Have Henry C. Mullen as preacher. Can someone take a look. Family Search has Adelmer Garlock married to Ada Mullen 1881 in Iowa. I have Adelmer married to Ida Amelia McDonald 1880 in Muscatine, Iowa.
