While visiting Mt Vernon this past summer I found the Library there to have an excellent genealogical collection. If you are there it is a must visit.

Anyone interested in a more thorough and up-to-date history of Lawrence
County with many more biographies, family histories, town histories,
church histories, school histories, maps, photos, etc., I would suggest
purchasing the 1974 Lawrence County Missouri History book on CD from the
Lawrence County Historical Society. It is not only in PDF format, but
is also in a "name" or "word" searchable format.

However because of the small print and the typesetting some words and
names are not "read" correctly by the scanner because letters were not
fully formed or were touching each other. Therefore, you may not find
every instance of a name or word using the word search. But I have
found it very valuable because the book does not have a full name
index.

Lawrence County, Missouri, History

CD ROM (requires Acobat Reader)
$30.00*
*Price includes shipping

Lawrence County Historical Society

Membership in the society is $10.00 per year/individual or $15.00 per

The following Reference Materials may be purchased from the historical
society. Along with your order, send a check, money order or cashiers
check to the above address. Copy this page and use as an order form.
Postage/Handling is $2.00 for the first book and $1.50 for each

You might want to check these out and put some on your Christmas gift
list.

A complete transciption of Goodspeed's 1888 History of Lawrence County
is free online compliments of Judy Johnson Reustle at the Lawrence
County GenWeb site. See

http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/history.htm

The biographies are at:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/bio/01.htm

Or you can buy a bound reprint for $9 from the Barry County
Genealogical & Historical. See

http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/barrycogen/society.html

"A Brief History of Lawrence County, MO: 1845-1970," published by the
LCHS, is under copyright 1970 by the LCHS. I would contact LCHS about
making a complete copy of the volume.

There is no index in the book, but there is a name index online at:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/briefindx.htm

The 1974 Lawrence County Missouri History (the "big red book") is for
sale on CD in searchable text format from the Lawrence County
Historical
Society for $30.00 including shipping. See

http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/society.htm

There are several. Those I have are:

"History of Mount Vernon and Lawrence County, MO: 1831-1931" by Mrs.
Lottie Sedwick Hurley. (68 pages, pretty good index, lots of family
names, a few photos mostly of places)

"A Brief History of Lawrence County, MO: 1845-1970," published by
the
LCHS. 144 pages. No index. More photos, lots of ads, which are
historical in themselves.

"Down Turnback Trails: a Sketch Book of Lawerence County, MO,"
Kathy
Seneker Fairchild, editor. 1992. Many photos with excellent captions.

Good index, good research.

I have the above three if you need a look up. You can also get
Turnback Trails from the LCHS. There are lots of other things there,
as
you probably know.

Oops. I just looked. Down turnback trails is out of print. For the
two small books, I suppose I could photo copy them and send them, for
the cost of the copies plus a couple dollars for shipping. The
Lawerence County Record used to also sell "Down Turnback Trails," so
you
might try them.

Here's perhaps the best news. At www.hearthstonelegacy.com you can
purchase a CD of Goodspeed's History of Lawrence County. I bought it,
and recall it is just under $20. It also has on it some LC maps and a
1913 publication of the Missour Bureau of Labor Statistics that has
interesting info on the area.

Of course, if you have time you want to go to Mount Vernon's
Library,
which houses the LCHS records and all these and more books.

Good luck.
