As far as I can find out, the tax collecting in the early days was done by townships. I suppose the lists were made up and the taxes collected by the justices of the peace. If someone has more information on this, I would appreciate hearing from them.
I asked at the collector's office this morning and they have no records there going back that far. A good many of the early records were destroyed because they were stored in a very poor place. I'll keep checking but have little hope of finding much.
