Death of D.J. Cunningham.

“D. J. Cunningham passed peacefully away at his home in this place
Sunday morning at 2 o’clock. Although his health had been failing for a
number of months he stayed at his post of duty until three weeks before
his death.
Mr. Cunningham was quiet and unassuming, but very determined in anything
he considered his duty. Reared in a Christian home and by Christian
parents, he (embraced) Christianity early in life and practiced it in
his daily walk.
Acting in the capacity of deacon and elder of the Madison Christian
church for a number of years, he discharged his duties conscientiously
and justly. Although his life was circumscribed (within) the limits of
a small circle and his fame was not trumpeted (to) the farthest ends of
the earth, yet a silent influence proceeded from him that made the
community better for him having lived.
Deceased was born in Monroe county, October 24, 1851, married to Miss
Sophia J. Wright, January 1, 1879, died March 16, 1902. He leaves a
wife, three children, an aged mother, four brothers, two sisters and
many relatives (and) friends to mourn his death. To the bereaved family
we extend (our) tenderest sympathy.”

Tribute of Respect.

Tribute of respect to the memory of D.J. Cunningham by the Christian
church, Sunday School, (…deavor) and Ladies’ Aid Society.

Born October 21, 1851 and died (March) 16, 1902. A good man has (left)
the earth. Daniel James Cunningham is no more. (Measured by
whatsoever) (unknown…) filled the requirements of (unknown) manhood, a
dutiful (unknown) and affectionate husband and devoted father, he was
ever mindful of the interests and happiness of his family. A good
citizen, he stood for truth and justice and was diligent in the
performance of all the duties that devolved upon him. He was a true
Christian, and walked with God in sublime faith. Early in life, he
obeyed the gospel and associated himself with the Christian church and
has kept the law and the covenants, serving God and man with firmness
and fidelity, never wavering from loyalty to Christ and his teachings.
He served the church as deacon and elder, continuously for many years,
with zeal and energy to the best interest of the brotherhood.
He leaves an aged mother (his father an upright Christian inso having
passed over the river many years ago) who helped the faithful father to
teach him in his boyhood days the beautiful lessons and assurances
contained in the sacred scriptures and showed him who has said, “I am
the light and the way,” and whose life he has made the ideal of his
soul.
A true and faithful wife whose Christian fortitude and constancy has
been to him a help, a stay and a shield throughout their united lives.
A devoted and cultured daughter whose love for him knew no limits and
two splendid , manly boys sober and industrious with bright prospects
for success in life, to all of whom we extend our sincere and
unqualified sympathy in this the time of (their) great bereavement. We
(command) them to the love and grace (of) the Lord, Jesus Christ.”
