“News of the death of Eld. J.C. Davis, received here Monday shocked our
people greatly. The deceased was much loved by all who knew him, and he
was known by everybody. He preached the funeral of Mrs. S.A. Morris and
Mrs. Mary Giddings at this place the Monday before his death. He went
home from here felling badly and took to his bed never to leave it
alive. He died of pneumonia Sunday night at his home in Monroe City,
where he was buried yesterday. Eld. Davis was eighty-one years of age
and had been a preacher of the gospel according to the Christian belief
for many years. His death will be universally mourned. He was a Mason
in good standing.
