Untitled, undated article; original source unknown. Extracted from the
newspaper article collection started in 1879 by Mrs. Nannie Brown of
Madison, Missouri.
"(Unable to read beginning of article .) (The deceased was the daughter
of L.M.) and Mary Bryant, west of this (unknown). At the age of sixteen
(years), she gave her heart to God (and) united with the Baptist church
at Hickory Grove (Ash). She has always lived the life of a christian,
and has gone early to her reward.
Three years ago she was married to Dennis Conway, of Ash. She was a
successful teacher in the public schools of this and Howard county for
three years. The deadly disease consumption soon began to make its
presence known and while everything that could be done was done, it
seemed in vain. As a last resort she was taken south with the hope that
a change of climate might produce a change for the better; but it was a
vain hope, "death had marked her for his own." In this case we all
realize that the "King of Shadows loves a shining mark." She was a
general favorite in the places where she was known, an affectionate
sister, daughter and wife. She bore her sufferings with great
fortitude, and was a patient, sweet tempered (invalid).
Her funeral was conducted by Bro. Smith, of the Baptist church at
Hickory Grove, who preached an able and appropriate sermon from Peter 1,
24, after which all that mortal of Julia (Bryant) Conway was laid to
rest in the cemetery.
She leaves a husband, father, mother, brother and four sisters, together
with many relatives and friends to mourn her loss. We all loved Julia,
we couldn't help (it) for she was the embodiment of (all) that it takes
to make a true (woman). By her death, we lose (one) of the most valued
members (of this) community. May we be (brought) to realize that "Whom
the Lord loveth he chasteneth," (and) "To live in hearts we leave
behind, is not to die." The Lord hath given; the Lord hath taken
(away); blessed be the name of (the Lord)."
