G.F. ROTHWELL DEAD.
He Passed Away as if Falling Asleep at 3 O'Clock This Morning.
"G.F Rothwell passed quietly away at 3 o'clock this morning, at his
residence on South Clark street. He was down town Monday and
superintended some repairs in the cellar of the large three-story
building on the corner of Reed and Williams streets. The structure long
bore the name of the Rothwell house. Tuesday he drove out to the
northwestern part of town to purchase some fine chickens. He was a
lover of fowls and find stock. He had a bad cold on Monday.
He has been quite sick, at times, for over a year. Yesterday afternoon
he became much worse and a telegram was sent to his brother, Dr. Thomas
P. Rothwell, of Mexico, for him to come to this city. The Dr. arrived
from Mexico at 7 o'clock last night. Hon. G.F. Rothwell gradually grew
worse during the night. He was revived several times, but only enough
to say a word or two and then would sink again. He died as if he was
going to sleep.
Gideon Francis Rothwell was born in Callaway county, Mo., April 23,
(186). He attended the Missouri University, graduating about 1857. He
was valedictorian. He taught school in early life; was a commissioner of
the public schools of Randolph county and when occupying that position
organized the schools into a system. He was mayor of Huntsville and
practiced law in that city. He moved to Moberly in 1872 and continued
the practice of law.
He was active in building up our city. He handled a good deal of real
estate. He stood high as an attorney and was especially eloquent.
He was elected to congress in 1878 and served from March 4, 1879 to
March 4, 1881. He was a presidential elector in 1888. Mr. Rothwell has
been a member of the board of curators of the University of the state of
Missouri for five years, and has been serving as president of the board;
devoting all his time to this work without remuneration. Thus he
performed to this (.unknown) work which (.unknown) service of his
(.unknown) Rothwell was a member of the Primitive (Baptist) church, and
of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
H married Miss Bettie Ragland (of) Monroe county, Mo. He leaves besides
his wife, three sons, G G Jr, (Roll?) R and Lewis M, one daughter, Mrs.
(?). G. Ferris; three sisters, Mesdames (unknown) W. A. Rothwell of
Moberly, (Lizzie) Reed of Butte, Montana, Mary (Gibb) of Mexico, Mo, two
brothers, Rev. (?) R Rothwell of William Jewell College of Liberty and
Dr. Thos R. Rothwell (of) Mexico. The funeral occurs at the Christian
church at 2:30 on Friday.
Mr. Rothwell was down to Columbia last Thursday. There was a meeting of
persons having charge of the agricultural college that day. Mr.
Rothwell rode around the grounds for (some) time and became chilled.
After (this), he mad a speech of an hour and this effort exhausted him
considerably. He took greater interest in the university than any one
who has ever been a curator. Coma was the cause of the death.
He was a man of strong convictions, always looking into everything that
came up well and then when he took a stand was ready to stand by his
opinions.
He and H.M. Porter, who died but a few days ago, were among the oldest
attorneys in the county.
