Untitled, undated article; original source unknown. Extracted from the
newspaper article collection started in 1879 by Mrs. Nannie Brown of
Madison, Missouri.
"Died, November 5th, 1888, (.unknown) Mrs. Emma E,, wife of E.R.
DeYoung, in the 52d year of her age. Mrs. DeYoung was born near
Roanoke, Mo. June 3d, 1837, where she lived until April 26, 1869, when
she was united in marriage to her now bereaved husband. She leaves
behind her an affectionate husband, a devoted daughter and a large
circle of friends and relatives to mourn their great loss. By industry
and economy she, with her husband, whose efforts she always seconded,
had built up a nice home, with an abundance of everything around them.
But, alas! All earthly homes and possessions fail us when death comes.
Mrs. DeYoung, kind, gentle and tender-hearted, was possessed of many
noble qualities which shown resplendent in her beautiful life. She took
sunshine and joy wherever she went, being always pleasant and cheerful.
As a citizen, she was generous-hearted and neighborly, visiting the sick
and otherwise blessing the community. As a wife, she was faithful,
loving and attentive to all the duties of a wife. As a mother, she was
tenderly endeared to an only child, a daughter, upon (which) she
lavished the affections of her heart, now in school in Central College,
Fayette, Mo., and who will graduate at the close of the present session.
Finally, as a citizen of Christ's Kingdom, she had an unswerving faith
in God and His Son. Early in life she made a profession of religion and
was received into the fellowship of the Presbyterian church. As a child
of God she was broad and liberal in her views, pious in her disposition,
and generous to those who differed from her in any way; never speaking
an unkind word of anyone. She was a constant attendant upon the
services of the Church and in many ways assisted in promoting the cause
of Christ. At the close of her earthly life it was the privilege of him
who traces these lines to be with her and engage in religious devotions,
which she enjoyed very much. Her bright eye, and calm expression in her
last moments gave evidence of a triumphant departure. Gently, quietly
and serenely, without (a) murmur, without a cloud to darken (her) brow,
she fell asleep in Jesus to await (the) morning of the resurrection.
Her remains were followed to the church by a large concourse of
relatives (and) friends. Appropriate services (were conducted) by Rev.
J.(E) Sharp after (which) she was buried in the (unknown.) near Holliday
where (. rest of article is missing)."
