Untitled and/or undated articles; possibly from the Monroe Appeal.
Extracted from the newspaper article collection started in 1879 by Mrs.
Nannie Brown of Madison, Missouri.
"Tan Bassett, Les Dry, Tom (Murphy) and Abe Hill left Sunday (for) Cape
Nome, Alaska, where (they) will remain until October or November. Rube
Holbrook (left the) week before and Dr. Wm. (Unknown) will start next
week."
KLONDIKERS (PART COMPANY).
Two Squads leave St. Michaels, The Others Await the Boat.
"As stated in last week's Appeal, the Missouri Alaska Gold Co. had
decided to make some move on August 7 in case their boat failed to
arrive by that date. The following letter was written by Tom Murphy,
August 7.
St. Michael's, August 7, 1898
We have about given the boat up, and a lot of us will break camp and
start up stream today. Had the boat come according to contract, we
would have made $100,000 this summer. As it is, we have made nothing.
Several of us had good jobs until we got word that our boar would be
here in four days. We gave up our jobs and went to cutting wood for use
on her. The boat failed to come and we could not get our jobs again, so
we have been sitting around here ever since.
Today we leave for Artic City, on the Koyukuk river, a tributary of the
Yukon. Arctic City is exactly on the Arctic circle. Our passage cost
us $110 each.
We divided into three squads. One of them, composed of Jas. B. Davis,
R.O. Osborn, Dr. Allen, Henry Wright, Beagles, Jones and Powers, will
remain at St. Michaels to take charge of the boat, if she ever comes.
If she fails to come, they will go to Rampart City to spend the winter.
Marcus Rodes, Chris Buerk, Rube Holbrook and myself form one squad, and
the third is composed of Tan Bassett, Abe Hill, Les Dry, Crigler and
Paff. We will go to different places.
Albert Homes, of Hannibal, was in camp yesterday. He says he will go
back to the States soon. Write us at Rampart City. Mail will be
received there all the winter, and can be sent to us by the men who go
there."
