Untitled, undated poem; original source unknown. Extracted from the
newspaper article collection started in 1879 by Mrs. Nannie Brown of
Madison, Missouri.

"In memory of Annie Rodgers, died Jan. 19, of pneumonia, aged 18 years."

A fair one from us is gone

A voice we loved is stilled

A place is vacant in our class

Which never can be filled.

For ten long years we've worked together

Each one striving to do his best,

Until at last God in his wisdom called

One to her haven of rest.

Gone in her youth too soon, alas too soon;

For us the startling summons came,

Which called from our sight away,

Swift as the prophet in chariot of flame.

A precious gift of God she (unknown)

To keep her with us we all were (unknown)

So dear she made herself to all our hearts

We feel it hard to give her back.

Her soul is now with Christ in (paradise)

Why then should we who loved her so be sad,

When her freed spirit from a happy home

Looks down in love upon us and is glad.

A Classmate.
