"The sad news was received here last Thursday that William Berkley, one
of Monroe county's oldest and most highly respected citizens, had
dropped dead in his yard, at about nine o'clock that morning. Mr.
Berkley and his son had been out in the yard separating some cows and
calves, and his had stepped into the house to warm, expecting his father
to follow shortly. After waiting for a period of some five minutes, the
son went back into the yard to look for his father, and was shocked
beyond measure to find the old gentleman lying on his back dead.

Mr. Berkley was 79 years of age, was born in Clark county, Ky., and came
to Missouri in 1858 and located on the farm upon which he died, where he
has resided up to the time of his death. He leaves a wife, three sons
and one daughter to mourn his loss, all of whom have the sympathy of the
whole people."
