Richard B. Smith Dead.
"Died, Friday morning, July 23, 1897, near this place, after a long,
patient and heroic, but unavailable battle with cancer, Richard B.
Smith, aged 59 years, 6 months and 17 days. Thus another one of Monroe
county's pioneers has been called from his labors here and has crossed
the dark river to receive his reward. Mr. Smith was born in Monroe
county, two and a half miles south of this place on Jan'y 5, 1838, was
married to Nancy E. Mason, April 7, 1859. To this union eight children
were born, five boys and three girls, four of the former and one of the
latter, still survive him, and all of whom live in Monroe county with
the exception of one son, who lives in Texas.
He was a man of strong individuality, unquestioned integrity and rugged
honesty. Every one who knew him was his friend, and his death, though
no unexpected, is universally regretted. Saturday morning his remains
were conducted to the Madison cemetery by Madison Lodge No. 91, A.F. &
A.M., and Bledsoe Camp, U.C.V., where the beautiful Masonic burial
service was held, after the conclusion of which they were consigned to
the grave. As an indication of the great respect and esteem in which he
was held, you have only to read elsewhere in this paper the testimonials
of those who were his life-long friends and brothers."
