Madison, Missouri.
"The (grief monster death) has again invaded our vicinity and chosen for
his victim one of our shining (lights) in the person of sister, Altha
Francis Herman. Sister Herman was born near Clayton, Adams county,
Ill., April 5, 1871, was married to our brother and deacon, James
Herman, Sept. 14, 1886. To this union were born two children, Myrtle
and Aubrey, Aubrey dying when young. Sister Herman professed faith in
her Savior when in Richmond, Kans., and united with the M.E. church.
After coming to Madison, she and her husband joined the Baptist church
Oct. 13, 1901. She lived a consistent Christian life until her death,
ever doing good to those with whom she came in touch. She was cheerful
during her sickness, but now has gone to a better world.
She leaves to mourn her death a loving, devoted husband and a dutiful
daughter to whom we extend sincere sympathy. To the heart broken
husband we would say lament not for her as one who has no hope of a
glorious meeting beyond the river for we know she is 'over there'
waiting to welcome him. May he 'look to the Lamb that taketh away the
sin of the world' and be comforted. To Myrtle the daughter we would
extend our heartfelt sympathy saying, prepare to meet your sainted
mother in Heaven. Do all in your power to comfort the father in this
sad bereavement. Live so that you may be a credit to society and a
consolation to your many friends. Be ready to meet the summons that
came to your mother, 'come up higher.' To the little boy who had
learned to love her, we say be a man. To the sister who listened to her
saying words, we would say grieve not for sister for we know our loss is
her eternal gain and if we live the life she did we will meet in a happy
reunion in the great beyond. The end came May 18th, 1903. After
services conducted by pastor the body was laid to rest in the Woodland
cemetery at Quincy, Illinois.
'What if we must bear a burden,
Have not others burdens too,
Look about and then be thankful,
That your burdens are so few.'
R.A. Jones, Pastor.
