Obituary.
"Died July 25th, Mrs. (Fannie)(unknown) Meals, beloved wife of J.E.
Meals, the only daughter of the late Elijah and Jane R. Broaddus and the
much loved sister of James B. Broaddus. Aged (3?) years, 6 months and
17 days. Seldom if ever did sadder news go from home to home in the
quiet neighborhood of Evansville than this. Mrs. Meals was severely
burned at 8:30 a.m. died 4 p.m. Telephone and telegraph caught up the
sad message and kindred and friends gathered into that hitherto happy,
(but) now desolate home. In one short day, a faithful young wife, the
joy of her husband's life had slipped from her husband's arms. The
loving hands of a cheerful, devoted mother have been withdrawn from
three little darlings never again to care and love as only a mother can.
An aged mother weeps bitter tears, the pride of her young motherhood,
the solace and comfort of her declining years has been so suddenly
snatched away and a strange loneliness has crept into the heart of (her)
brother. Never again will Fannie smooth the rough places and dispel the
clouds and bring in the sunshine and constantly be the joy of his life.
This is a bereaved family. It is an hour (of) true sorrow, yet in all
this there is (a) ray of hope. We thank God that the aching hearts know
that there is a (place) prepared for those who love him and keep his
commandments, a place where death cannot enter, a place where partings
are unknown. Husband, mother and brother ye one another with this great
truth. It is the golden thread that makes life worth living robs death
of its sting and makes it (unknown) transition."
