Subject: [MOMONROE] Historical Society meeting
Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2002 09:06:30 EST
Just a reminder to those of you in and around Monroe County....
The Monroe County Historical Society will hold it's last meeting of 2002
tonight, November 25th, at 7:30 in the community room of the Monroe County
Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. Building, 125 W. Monroe, across form the Post
Office in Paris.
Our program will be Monroe County and the Spanish Influenza Epidemic of World
War I. Fall is typically the beginning of cold and flu season and November
11th is Veteran's Day. The national holiday was originally called Armistice
Day in recognition of the World War I Vets. That war and the even more
devistating Spanish Influenza Epidemic of 1918 are largely ignored by
history. That flue epidemic reportedly killed 30 million people worldwide and
more American soldiers died from the influenza than died in battle. By a very
conservative estimate 550,000 Americans died at home and abroad. How was
Monroe County affected? Come to the meeting tonight and find out.
I will also have several lists of the names of draftees copied form selected
1918 editions of The Paris Mercury and a magnifying glass to read them.
Members and guests are welcome to view the newspaper clippings during the
social hour after the meeting.
The Monroe County Historical Society meets the fourth Monday of every month
except December. Dues are $5.00 a year. Meeting locations may vary in 2003.
Visitors are always welcome.
Sincerely,
Nancy Stone, president
