Death of William Sumpter.
"Death has again been in our midst and called another aged citizen to
eternal rest. William Sumpter was born in Wayne county, Kentucky, Sept.
23, 1831, and died Sept. 9, 1905, aged 73 years, 11 months and 16 days.
He came to Missouri when but an infant and has resided in Monroe and
adjoining counties ever since. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Jenkins
June 15, 1856, and to this union four daughters were born, three of
whom, Mrs. C.T. Quisenburry, Miss Mollie Sumpter and Mrs. Joe Thomas,
are left to mourn the loss of a father. When but eighteen years of age
he united with the Methodist church and to the time of his death lived a
consistent and devoted member of that church. Indeed love for and
loyalty to his church was one of his strongest characteristics and he
was always ready to give a reason for the hop that was in him. Very
seldom was his seat at church vacant, he being a faithful and regular
attendant at all the services of (the church).
The immediate cause of his death was a congestive chill brought on by a
severe attack of kidney trouble with which he had been suffering for a
week. The news of his death came as a shock to the whole community, not
many knowing that he was sick until the news that he was dead went
abroad. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in this
place Sunday afternoon by Rev. Rooker in the presence of a large
audience, many not being able to gain attendance. Mr. Sumpter was a man
universally loved and respected, and will be greatly missed in this
community where he has lived so long. After the funeral services the
remains were interred in the Madison cemetery."
