Award Nolen Parental

“At the Oak Grove Baptist Church near Woodlawn Sunday morning, Mr. and
Mrs. James M. Harrison of that neighborhood were announced as the 1959
winners of the annual Kate Nolen Parental Award. The announcement was
made by Rev. Golden Neeley, pastor of the church, and the silver platter
award was made to them by Miss Bonnie Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Russell Johnson, a relative of the late Mrs. Nolen. Others of the Nolen
family who attended were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Nolen, Olliver W. Nolen, Mr.
and Mrs. Clarence Johnson and Russell Johnson. In making the
announcement Rev. Neeley read the qualifications on which the award is
made to a Monroe County Couple each year. Nominations are made to
Attorney Olliver Nolen, the donor of the award, selection by the mayors
of Monroe City, Paris and Madison. Recipients are judged on the
qualities and accomplishments of their children, on the theory that the
virtues of the parents are reflected in their children. Mr. and Mrs.
Harrison have been lifelong farmers. Mrs. Harrison is the former Miss
Alva Delaney. The award was set up in 1947 by Attorney Nolen to honor
the memory of his mother, the late Mrs. Kate Nolen, mother of a large
family. To be considered, parents must have had not less than three
children.

Mr. and Mrs. Harrison, according to their statement, have tried to
create in their children a desire for higher learning, have persuaded
each child to pursue his or her own chosen field of work and to strive
to attain a respectable goal in life. They have tried to instill in
each the love of God and a trust in their fellowman. Mr. and Mrs.
Harrison are the parents of seven living children, five of whom were
present Sunday. Two daughters live in California and could not be
