Found after 2-Day Search
Robert Davis Smith Found Dead in Barn
"Robert Davis Smith, know to everyone as Speck Smith, died Monday March
3rd of a gunshot wound in the head. Smith was found dead in a barn on
what is know as the old John Bloodworth farm two miles south of Madison,
about twenty five minutes of four. The body was found by a
brother-in-law, Raymond Yohe and a close friend, Charles Davis. Smith
was in his father-in-law's (Edgar) Johnston car when he was found by the
two men. Monroe County Coroner Russell Wilson, Monroe City, termed the
death suicide. He had been missing from his home north of Madison since
early Monday morning. When he didn't appear at work at Art's Appliance
where he was employed, Art Riley notified his wife, Mrs. Smith, of his
absence. A search through this locality was made and later Monday when
he could not be found a state wide search was made. Tuesday morning,
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Yohe, and Charles Davis made a search in a plane
driven by Davis See of Moberly in an attempt to fine the whereabouts of
Smith. A search was made at different times by several in the
community. No trace was found until he was located in the barn. Smith
had been in ill health for several years.
He was born December 22, 1922 in Madison and had spent his entire life
in Madison and the Madison community. He attended Madison Grade and
High school. Also her served three years in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife, the former Wilma Johnston, tow sons, Robbie
7 years; Randy 3 years, and a daughter Rhonda, aged 4 months; his father
Robert Smith of Hannibal; two brothers, Ralph Smith of the U.S. Navy of
(Norfolk), Virginia, Bill Smith, Hannibal; one sister, Mrs. Perry
Righter of Mexico. He is also survived by a grandfather, Dr. Raymond
Yohe of Madison and several aunts and uncles. His mother, Mary Yohe
Smith, and a sister preceded him in death. Speck leaves a host of
friends. The body was brought to the Thompson Funeral Home and will
remain there until the hour of the services which will be held Friday
afternoon at 2:30 at the Chapel with Rev. Coleman White officiating.
Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery."
