Mrs. Atterbury Dies
"Mrs. Tessie Waller Atterbury, 84, widow, of Eugene Atterbury, died at
3:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Deaconess Hospital, St. Louis,
where she was a patient the past ten days, having undergone surgery
there Saturday. Mrs. Atterbury had been in (St.) Louis the past five
weeks, going with her daughter, Mrs. Frank E. Alston, for a short visit
when she became seriously ill. She was thought to be recuperating
satisfactorily when her heart failed her and death occurred. Mrs.
Atterbury was the last member of the family of Capt. George and Jane
Waller, pioneer residents of Monroe County. She was born Dec. 18, 1871,
near Madison and was married Dec. 18, 1895 to Eugene Atterbury. With
the exception of a few years when the family lived in St. Louis and
later in Moberly and for four years in Albuquerque, N.M., where they
went for the benefit of Mr. Atterbury's (health), most of her life was
spent in Madison which she considered her home. Mrs. Atterbury
sustained a fractured hip in November, 1952, and had been in ill health
since. She was a member of the Madison Christian Church and of the
Christian Women's Fellowship. Mrs. Atterbury is survived by her
son-in-law and daughter, Mrs. and Mrs. Alston; and a sister-in-law, Mrs.
J.W. Atterbury of Madison; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr.
Atterbury died in February 1953. Mrs. Margaret Woods, long time editor
of the Madison Times, Mrs. Alice Eubank and Mrs. Eula Hill, and a
brother William. F. Waller, also preceded her in death. Services were
held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday by the Rev. C.W. Cornn. Burial was in
Sunset Hill Cemetery."
