Emmett Riley Ends His Life at Madison
Son Finds Father in Car in Front of Home; Shot Through Head
"Madison - Emmett A. Riley, 53, a life-long resident of the Madison
community, took his own life about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, in an
automobile parked in front of his home. Riley was found shot through
the head with a 32-caliber automatic pistol about 3:30 o'clock by his
son, Bobby Riley, a Madison High School student, as he returned from
school. Mr. Riley was born in Middle Grove and had lived in Madison for
the last nine years, following the death of his wife, the former Miss
Erma Lee Smiley of near Madison. Despite ill health, he reared their
six children and kept them together. He was a veteran of World War One.
He attended rural school and Madison High School. Surviving are his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. William F. Riley of this vicinity; six children,
Mrs. Harry Deering of Wichita, Kan., Carolyn Kay, Bobby and Jimmy of the
home, Kenneth Riley who is with the U.S. Army in North Carolina, and
Harry Riley of the U.S. Army who is stationed in Fort Bliss, Tex.; two
grandchildren; and two brothers, Eddie T. Riley of Madison and Estill
Riley, near Middle Grove. The body will be in the Thompson Funeral Home
until services at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Madison Christian
Church by the pastor, the Rev. C.W. Cornn. Burial will be in the
Madison cemetery."
