hi Peter,
I'd be interested in any Fowlers, Hodges, and Drakes you come across.
Thanks.

I'm compiling a roster of Co. D, 2nd Missouri Infantry (CSA),
recruited mostly from Morgan County. I'm just about done with the
Compiled Service Records microfilms for surnames beginning with A
through F (the films have the whole regiment, not just Co. D). I'll
probably send them back on Monday. If anyone needs something checked,
let me know and I'll be happy to look it up over the weekend. I'll be
ordering the remaining films in three or four batches over the next
few months.
I'd also be happy to hear from anyone with information about family
members who served in this unit. Once I've got the information licked
into shape, I'll be posting the full roster on the Morgan County
GenWeb site.
It's fascinating to put together a company roster like this. For
example, of the 32 men (whose surnames started with A through F) who
mustered in in January, 1862, or who joined shortly afterwards, 10 --
almost a third of them -- were left behind sick or wounded when the
unit crossed the Mississippi in April. Of these 10 only one managed
to rejoin the company. One died; the rest were kept on the rolls
until late in 1863 when they were written off as deserters (probably
at the time the regiment was consolidated with the 6th Missouri
Infantry). Whether they died, or became guerrillas, or just went
home, the company didn't know, and we probably never will either. Of
the 32, only 4 were with the regiment when it surrendered in May,
1865.
I already had the service record of my gr.gr.uncle J.E. Humes, who
was a sergeant in this company, but I hit the jackpot in another
man's record: William Dudley and J.E. Humes were charged before a
court martial with stealing a rifle, and the record of the case got
stuck in Dudley's file (even though Dudley was only charged as an
accessory). I would never have known about this case without going
through the film one record at a time. The charges were dismissed for
lack of evidence, but it seems pretty clear from the testimony that
*someone* in the company took advantage of an opportunity to replace
his flintlock musket with an Enfield rifle belonging to a soldier in
a Mississippi regiment, and the evidence that it *wasn't* Ed Humes
looks pretty weak.
