The New Madrid Memorial Library (county) is located at Mill Street just
off Main. From I-55, exit on US Highway 61. Turn onto Scott Street at a
blinking light and proceed east to Main Street. Turn south (right) onto Main
Street--the courthouse is on your right--until you (very shortly) reach a
traffic light. Turn left onto Mill Street and the library will be on your left.
Extra parking is in the rear.
Librarian is Martha Hunter and assistant librarian is Jeri Ruth
Patterson, and either will be happy to assist you. The library, complete with a
genealogy room, is newly renovated. Archived copies of most of New Madrid's
newspapers are available on microfilm. (573 748-2378) Sorry I don't have their
hours handy.
While in town, visit the New Madrid Historical Museum at 1 Main on the
right-hand side nestled against the levee. It contains memorabilia of the
Civil War, the earthquake, and other artifacts of the town's 215-year-old
history. I believe it remains the only museum in the state of Missouri open every
day except Christmas. Factor in time to view its 5-minute video which sets
the stage for your visit.
You may also want to visit the Higgerson School Historic Site, a
one-room schoolhouse renovated to depict the school milieu of the 1940s. It is
located on the west side of Main Street. I believe it is open by request.
BTW: New Madrid has a just published pictorial book, "Looking Back."
It is probably available at the museums. And at the Chamber of Commerce
office located in city hall on Mott Street across from the school museum. The
Chamber's number is 574 748-5300.
Enjoy.
