Did you ever get the info you were looking for regarding the Newton Co. murders involving the brothers? I do know a bit...but curious if someone responded to your personal email address. I just don't want to repeat what youalready know.

The Carthage Banner of Oct. 5, 1871
Murder at Minersville
Charles Short, a miner late of Granby, was shot through the breast at an
affray at Minersville, (Joplin), on Monday night, Sept. 26, and instantly
killed. The assassins name is Harris, also a miner, who fled, and has thus
far escaped arrest.
The remains of Mr. Short were brought home on Tuesday to Granby, where he
leaves a wife and several children. He was about 30 years of age. A similiar
fate has befallen the family to whom Short belonged, three of his brothers
haveing perished by pistol shots in affrays, the latest being James Short,
who, it will be remembered, was killed some two years since, at Granby, by
one Gilchrist, who was pursued and shot at by the whole population of Granby,
and desperately wounded, and was afterwards rescued from the hands of his
attendants by a band of his confederates.------Neosho Journal.

I am trying to find the death date of James Short. According to his probate
folder in the courthouse, he owned and operated the Granby Bar-Pool Hall and
other properties. Hummmm no wonder the whole town shot at Mr. Gilchrist!
The probate file started 14 March 1869. So apparently James was killed just
before this date.
I am searching for the names of the other brothers that were killed. There
was a court case in Joplin involving Charles Short and Ellis Short. Ellis
Short is not listed in the 1850 census of Newton Co in the household of
Rebecca Short. Charles was the youngest son listed. My husbands Gt. Gt.
Grandmother was a sister to these brothers. I also heard that a Henderson
Short was hung for horse stealing somewhere between there & St. Louis.
Henderson was in early Newton Co. (1850s) records so I dont know if he was a
son or not!
Whew, I sure would have hated to have met these Short brothers on a cold dark
night!
Anybody out there claim kin to this family? Any help appreciated! Thanks a
million!
Loretta
