Does anyone connect to the John DAVIS in Newton County who appears to have married Mary SHIPMAN on May 21, 1877?

Mary is listed in the 1880 Census in the household of my great grandparents Daniel Shipman and Elizabeth (ANDERSON) SHIPMAN as Mary DAVIS at the age of 17 and as a widow. I am interested in any info regarding this man and how he died. The Davis family lived out by the Shipman's farm in Granby and I am going to assume right now that he was from that family. But you know what kind of trouble "assuming" can get you into! :-)
