Well...about Bacon Ridge. There is a street now in Granby named Bacon Ridge..and I have a cousin who lives on it...but that is NOT the Bacon Ridge that my grandfather coined the phrase about in his articles for the newspaper. In fact, the house that he and my Grandma "Crilly" (Corillia Ann ROSS HOWARD) lived in is still there on the real Bacon Ridge from which he wrote. He liked living there and sorta built this whole spoof up about how it was the best place in the world to live, etc. (And who knows? Maybe it was!) He named the area sorta across the road Slopbucket Hill, etc.,...all in a sort of humorous oldtime way that added to the stories. It is on the north side of the road as you head west on Hwy 60 from Main street...sorta as you are coming up the hill there...not far from Main Street. Ray Mathis built a bunch of little cabins there (which my grandfather also talks a lot about in his notes) and they were built from the brick I believe from a smelter when they tore it d!
own. (Would have to check my notes on that one.) Anyway, the Wetaker Hollow mentioned is appx. 2 miles southeast of Granby on old Hebron Road on the way to Hebron, of course. My great great Aunt Frances (HALEY) Thompson, known as "Aunt Frank" also used to hunt panthers out in that area.
The Big Indian mentioned in Otis' article was a mine out in that area as well.
Back to Bacon Ridge...my mom and her sister recalled and told me a long time ago about how their dad (Otis Howard) wouldn't let them play sorta off over the hill from the house sorta east toward Main Street. He said he could recall that an old zinc fort had been built there and was used in the Civil War. (No, it's not there anymore. I believe the people who owned the property sold the blocks eventually.) The little fort had been used for protection from bushwackers, many, many years ago.
(I hope everyone understands I have tons of notes and just sorta repeat what I've been told. I have been collecting this stuff for over 30 years and am just sorta passin' on stuff as I know lots of you love the same stuff I do!
