My GGGGrandfather was with the Missouri State Volunteer Militia and then joined the 14th Missouri Volunteer Calvary. All the information was in his Military file which included all his muster in and out records as well as the roll call cards. I got his wife and daughter's pension records also and there was over an inch of documentation there, including birth and death records. So if you can narrow down if it is him, the $27 and I believe $18 for the two files are well worth it. Of course if you aren't sure, then maybe not.
Now to just find where he is buried in SW Missouri.

I ran into the same problem with my anscestor. He was with the Missouri Militia too with the Engineers. There should be records somewhere...I thought perhaps where my grandfather enlisted, but I never had time to make the trip to Polk County. May be a good place for you to start looking though if you've come up empty at the Archives.

His service records indicate that he was with the Missouri 14th Regiment
Calvary State Militia, Company B. You said that there should be records.
Are you talking about the Missouri Archives?
Thank you,
