Margaret,
Yes, genealogy is fun! The mystery & I've always loved a good mystery
and the chase, plus the thrill of finding proof of my suppositions.

You are definitely blessed to have the letter telling of family facts.
But you could possibly be assuming incorrectly based on what you
want to believe. On the 1850 & 1860 census, it's a natural ASSUMPTION
that the younger people living with Mary are her children.
However, that's not fact. They only have the same names. It's up to
you to provide further details. Making that assumption has led me
down the wrong path more that once, only to find later those in the
household might be other family relations. It looks that one of that
gals maybe found a likely marriage for you in TN. Regrettably, I don't
have cemetery records and can't even tell you the name of the
cemetery I mentioned. The Nathaniel mentioned in the letter could
indeed be son Charles N(athaniel)?

When I said follow the money, I meant exactly that. Land is money & on
both 1850 & 1860 it implies Mary (although she could have been poor)
owned land. Find out what happened to it & when & you may learn much
more. Also, do you have a copy of Nathaniel's service record?

I know you'll have a grand time searching all these things!
